Angela's Eatery Opens on Webster St With Afghan Menu
Chef Saboor Zafari's fourth Alameda restaurant just opened, and it's serving duck strudel and eggplant tahdig.

Webster Street has a new dinner spot, and it comes from a chef who's cooked on the island for a quarter century. Angela's Eatery opened Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 1427 Webster St., and it's worth knowing about if you like trying something you can't get anywhere else in town.
Who's Behind Angela's Eatery in Alameda
Chef Saboor Zafari is the name behind it. He's been running restaurants in Alameda for more than 25 years, and this new spot is actually the fourth version of Angela's he's opened on the island. The restaurant has closed and moved a few times over the years, so if the name rings a bell, that's why.
What's on the Menu
This isn't a typical West End dinner menu. Zafari's cooking modern Afghan food, and the dishes lean creative. Starters include duck strudel, which is duck confit wrapped in phyllo pastry, along with leek and spinach stuffed bolani and a French onion soup. For dinner entrees, expect beef pappardelle, eggplant tahdig with crispy saffron rice, and petrale sole.
That's a menu that mixes Afghan staples like bolani and tahdig with French and Italian technique. It's not a combination you'll find at most places between the Miller Sweeney Bridge and the estuary.
When You Can Get a Table
Angela's Eatery started with a three-day soft opening for dinner service. After that, it moves to full lunch and dinner hours. That's good news if you work near Webster Street and want a sit-down lunch option that isn't a sandwich shop.
Why It's Worth a Visit
Small, independent restaurants that survive 25 years in one town don't happen by accident. Zafari's stuck around through closures and moves because people kept coming back, and that's the kind of track record that's hard to fake. A new location means a fresh menu and a reason to give it another look, even if you remember an earlier version of Angela's from years ago.
It's also one more sign that the stretch of Webster Street on Alameda's West End keeps filling back in. If you've been meaning to check out what's new there, this is a good excuse.
