Malaya Tea Room Now Has a Walk-In Cafe on Central Avenue
You don't need a reservation or a $45 minimum anymore. Cafe Malaya serves matcha, lattes and sandwiches every Wednesday.

You can finally walk into Malaya Tea Room without booking ahead. The Central Avenue tea room started a weekly walk-in cafe service on Wednesday, July 8, giving Alameda a casual way to get a drink from the beloved spot that's usually booked solid for formal afternoon tea.
It's called Cafe Malaya, and for now it only runs on Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m. Owners plan to eventually stretch those hours to 7 p.m. if it catches on.
What's different from regular Malaya Tea Room hours
If you've wanted to try Malaya but didn't want to commit to a full sit-down tea service, this is your opening. The regular afternoon tea seatings at 920 Central Ave. come with a $45 minimum per person and run Thursday through Sunday in three time slots. Cafe Malaya skips all of that. You just walk in, order at the counter and grab a table if one's open.
The menu leans casual too:
- Specialty matcha drinks
- Lattes and other coffee drinks
- Light snacks and sandwiches
It's a smaller, faster version of what's made the tea room a Central Avenue fixture: British and Southeast Asian-style tea service built around recipes owner Leena Lim grew up with in Malaysia.
Why it matters for Central Avenue
Central Avenue doesn't have a ton of casual coffee stops, so a walk-in option from an already-established local business fills a real gap. It's also a low-risk way for Malaya to test whether there's daytime demand for something quicker than a full tea service, without touching its existing weekend business.
Regular tea service is still by reservation
If you want the full experience, that's still Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., split into three seatings: 11 to 1, 1:15 to 3:15, and 3:30 to 5:30. The tea room stays closed Monday through Wednesday outside of the new cafe hours. So Cafe Malaya is really carving out a new slot in an otherwise closed part of the week, not competing with the weekend business.
